Yavapai-Apache Nation to join retirement system after injured officer fired [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona’s Family Investigates has learned that the Yavapai-Apache Nation is taking steps toward joining the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, which would ensure pension benefits for retired and disabled tribal police officers.

But the Nation waited until after it fired Preston Brogdon to take the recent steps. Brogdon was shot in the line of duty in 2022 and suffered disabling injuries as a result. Brogdon would not be eligible for the benefits.

“I’m happy they did it. It’s always been part of the plan to get these guys retirement, especially the guys that have spent 20-plus years there. They were promised this and promised this and promised this. It doesn’t do me any good now, but I’m happy it’s done. I mean, I’m happy they’re doing it for them,” said Brogdon during an interview on Monday.
