Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing Jr. will run for Omaha mayor [Video]

Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing Jr. will run for mayor of Omaha.

Ewing plans to formally announce his candidacy next Thursday.

He said he decided to seek the seat because he sees “a lot of divisiveness” around the nation and “a lot of people wanting to force their values or their thoughts on other people.”

“I am a person that looks at being respectful and inclusive of everyone and unifying people, rather than focusing on things that divide,” Ewing said. “I believe that what this city needs is a leader who is respectful of all the people of this community.”

Ewing will challenge Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, a Republican and the three-term incumbent who announced Tuesday that she will seek reelection. City Council President Pete Festersen and State Sen. Mike McDonnell have said they are deliberating making a run for mayor.
