Uganda Disability Inclusion Programme – April 2024 update

The project seeks to:
• Identify and locate disabled children and young people living in the community through specially-created child welfare committees
• Train teachers at local schools how to educate students with additional needs, whether through sign language, autism-friendly learning or measures to help physically disabled children (192 teachers trained to date)
• Provide schools with infrastructure improvements such as wheelchair ramps (82 installed so far) and accessible toilets (six sets, across three schools)
• Integrate disabled children into mainstream education, so that they can play a full part in the school community and realise their hopes, dreams and ambitions.
• Stage inclusive sports festivals so that disabled and non-disabled children can play and have fun together, reducing fear and stigma and building up the whole community.
And it’s working! We started this project in Buikwe district in 2022, anticipating 1,360 children to be taking part. In fact, we have worked in 60 schools, reaching 2,385 youngsters!
