UAB students react after DEI bill signed into law [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – On Wednesday, Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a bill that will ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs at public schools, universities and state agencies.

Several students across the state have publicly opposed this bill, including several at the University of Alabama Birmingham, starting petitions and meeting with city and state leaders to try to prevent it from being passed.

The Alabama legislation would prohibit universities from sponsoring DEI programs, defined under the bill as classes, training, programs and events where attendance is based on a person’s race, sex, gender identity, ethnicity, national origin or sexual orientation.

Students say they’re cautiously optimistic as they await official word from UAB.

“We’re hoping that administration, at least at UAB, continues to hold diversity close to the heart and we’re hoping that not a lot will be affected, but what is expected, I think at least, is a lot of changes,” said student Miguel Luna.
