Two longtime, well-known Sumter businessmen pass away [Video]

One owned a chain of grocery stores and a farm, while the other was in the hardware business.

SUMTER, S.C. — The Sumter community is mourning the loss of two well-known businessmen.

Billy McLeod and Carl Simpson passed away this week. McLeod was 93 while Simpson was 83. 

McLeod started in the grocery store business 70 years ago back in 1954. He was the owner of multiple Piggly Wiggly stores across the Midlands.

He was also in the cattle business and was the owner of Black Crest Farms near Sumter.

Funeral services  for McLeod will take place Saturday afternoon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sumter..

Simpson was the the owner of the Simpson Hardware Stores in Sumter. He was named the 2002 businessperson of the year by the city. 

A graveside service for Simpson will take place this Sunday at the Evergreen Memorial Park.
