Oscarville, Georgia was once a prosperous Black community full of farmers, tradespeople, and landowners. But in 1912, false accusations led to the destruction of this town by white mobs. Homes and churches were burned, residents were murdered or driven out, and the land was eventually flooded to create Lake Lanier. Today, Lake Lanier generates over $5 billion for Georgia, yet none of Oscarville’s landowners were compensated and the truth of this tragedy was buried for decades. We dive into the hidden history of Oscarville, how targeted racial violence robbed Black communities of billions in generational wealth, and what lessons America still needs to learn about confronting the sins of the past.
