Panel Discussion: Women in Public Finance

A thought-provoking panel discussion ‘Women in Public Finance’ was hosted by Janaagraha and featured dignitaries such as Dr. Yamini Atmavilas, President (Strategy & Research) at The Udaiti Foundation, Bharati Das (ICAS), Former Controller General of Accounts (CGA) of India, and Shobhini Mukerji, Executive Director at Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) South Asia. This was the first session held at the Induction Workshop for the Women’s Fellowship in Public Finance for Cities this January.

Apula Singh, Manager, Public Finance at Janaagraha, anchored the discussion, guiding it through structured questions directed at each individual panellist. Representing women in academia, governance, and philanthropy, the panellists shared invaluable perspectives and knowledge on various issues related to public finance from a gender lens.

The discussion covered some critical issues such as:
1. Gender diversity in Public Finance and its positive impact on decision-making and resource allocation.
2. Personal journeys of the Panellists and the challenges of being a woman in the Public Sector and Public Finance
3. Areas for reform and what’s required
4. Panellists’ hopes and aspirations for the sector

This enlightening panel discussion left us with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to championing gender equality in the realm of public finance. Let’s continue the conversation and work collaboratively towards a future where diversity and inclusion are integral to financial decision-making.
