National Cyber Director Harry Coker Jr. wants to develop a more diverse and well-trained cyber workforce nationwide.

NORFOLK, Va. — The National Cyber Director paid a visit to Norfolk State University on Wednesday.

Harry Coker Jr. toured the university’s cyber security complex and led a roundtable discussion with students. He talked about the Biden Administration’s strategy for increasing diversity.

“Black Americans, women, and other minority communities are particularly underrepresented in cyber jobs,” Coker said during the roundtable. “In fact, Black Americans make up 12% of the workforce. We only make up 8% of the technology workforce.”

The Office of the National Cyber Director was created by President Biden in 2021 and advises the president on matters related to cybersecurity. Coker was confirmed to lead the agency last December.
