ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded on principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

That foundation proved life-changing for an African American family back in 1967.

Cedric McCollins was just 2 years old when he was treated at St. Jude.

He’s survived for more than five decades. Today, McCollins and his parents are grateful for a hospital they say didn’t turn them away because of the color of their skin.

To this day, McCollins continues to support St. Jude.

When it opened in 1962, it was the only fully integrated hospital that would treat children — regardless of race, religion or the ability to pay.
