INDIANAPOLIS (WTHI) – A controversial higher education bill continues moving forward in Indiana.
Tuesday, the Indiana House passed Senate Bill 202, which supporters call a measure to promote intellectual diversity. Among the stipulations in the bill is a plan to reform the tenure process at public universities in Indiana. The 67-to-30 vote sends the bill back to the Senate to consider changes made in the House. The proposed legislation has drawn criticism from many higher education officials as it’s made its way through the statehouse.
The bill requires public university boards to consider whether faculty members are likely to enforce their views on students when granting or continuing tenure. The bill also sets forth standards for considering similar matters in conducting tenure reviews, which would happen every five years.
