SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – In the early 1800s a large lake covered the lands that are now Market Street and Youree Drive in Shreveport. But do you know the old Native American legend about that lake? It’s not a coincidence that there’s a “Lake Street” in downtown Shreveport.

Long before Captain Shreve or any other Old World-descendant person arrived in Northwest Louisiana, the Caddo Nation lived here. And back then, the environment looked much different than it does today. For one, much of Northwest Louisiana was known as the “Great Swamp.” There were gators, bears, and mosquitos galore, and the creeks and streams that we still know and love today were much deeper.
