The holiday shopping season goes into full swing after Thanksgiving.

This weekend is one of the most important times of the year for businesses and is filled with specials for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.

For those looking to shop local, there’s a plethora of holiday markets and events around the Denver metro region featuring hundreds of Colorado-based businesses for Small Business Saturday.

The annual shopping day to highlight the importance of supporting local businesses for the economy was founded in 2010 by American Express and later co-sponsored by the Small Business Administration, the federal agency supporting entrepreneurs.

Last year, U.S. shoppers spent approximately $17 billion on Small Business Saturday, according to American Express.
