OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEVV) —Just before 11 A.M. crews arrived at the tire recycling plant, they were met with towering flames fueled by stacks of tires, making it easy to spread.
The cause of the fire, officials say, was a spark from River Metals, a nearby business, that landed on the tires and ignited the blaze.
44News spoke with Owner of Tire Recycling Inc., Ken Frazier, on what happened this morning.
“The guy was burning a big piece of metal and the molten aluminum just sat there and it started getting too hot. Evidently there was enough molted there, that when he shot the water on it the temperature changed so much that it exploded,” Frazier explained.
Flames and thick black smoke were pouring into the sky, making this fire especially challenging to contain. …
