Pouring Diversity: A look into Arizonas first black-owned vineyard [Video]

WILLCOX, AZ (AZFamily) — Doajo Hicks is pouring diversity into the world of wine.

Hicks opened up Arizona’s first and only Black and Native American family-owned vineyard in Willcox.

“I went in feet first and really just took a risk,” Hicks said.

Hicks started the business nearly four years ago after purchasing a 250-acre estate just off Country Club Drive in Willcox. The family grows their very own grapes and processes them to make over 19 different types of wine.

“We have a little bit of everything for everyone’s pallet. Sweet wines to dry wines,” he said.

So far, Coronado Vineyards has been recognized for several of its wines in competitions such as the Decanter World Wide Awards and Sommeliers Choice Awards.

While it’s been a journey for Hicks, he hopes his story can inspire other black business owners.
