Omaha Latino restaurants close Monday in protest [Video]

What does a day without immigrants look like in America?

Judging by South Omaha’s heavily Latino business district along 24th Street, it looks like many empty restaurants, few places to shop and, subsequently, little customer traffic.

As President Donald Trump’s administration promises harsher immigration policies, Latino business owners across the Omaha area closed their doors on what was an otherwise average Monday. The owners’ decision comes as part of “A Day Without Immigrants” national protest.

A closed Abelardo’s in Omaha on Monday. It was among several Mexican and Latin American restaurants that did not open for “A Day Without Immigrants.”

Several Mexican and Latin American restaurants, including local chains Abelardo’s Mexican Food and Lina’s Mexican Restaurant, announced their locations were closed for the day in solidarity with immigrants. Other businesses that announced they were closed for the day included La Sierra, south of downtown Omaha, Hacienda Real in central Omaha, and the landscaping company Burro’s Lawn and Landscape.
