Local civil rights leader speaks out on Trumps planned rollback of federal DEI initiatives [Video]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – U.S. President Donald J. Trump has only been in office for a few hours since his inauguration Monday morning, but he has already planned to sign executive orders with sweeping effects.

One of his Day One plans is drawing anger from local civil rights groups, but support from Republicans.

President Trump will sign an executive order terminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the federal government, which has long been condemned by conservatives.

DEI programs are designed to foster equitable environments in businesses and schools, especially for historically marginalized communities.

Many DEI programs were launched in 2020 during increased calls for racial justice.

Some argue that these programs violate the Constitution by preferencing job candidates based on race, gender, and sexual orientation.

Civil rights attorney and former NAACP Memphis chapter president Van Turner and Republican Congressman David Kustoff talked about their thoughts on this issue.
