Hundreds attend Montgomery Countys Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival and Childrens Carnival [Video]

BETHESDA, Md. (DC News Now) — Hundreds of people came out to Cabin John Regional Park for the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival and Children’s Carnival in Bethesda to celebrate Juneteenth.

People who attended the event on Wednesday called it an opportunity to showcase Black culture to people of different backgrounds and an opportunity to preserve and celebrate Black history.

“It’s a happy day because of the years of sadness and opression,” said Jahkia Koomson who attend the event and showcased her goods from Ghana at the festival.

Many show out to Juneteenth celebration at National Harbor

For small business owners like Koomson who attend the event, the festival served as an opportunity to diffuse her African roots and teach others the hardships Black Americans faced while they were enslaved.

“It’s basically a learning opportunity for all people,” Koomson told DC News Now. “If you’re from a different ethnicity, a different background, you can come and learn about African culture.”
