Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, word of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston, Texas, more than two years after it was issued.

“In order for us to move forward, we have to come together,” C.J. Durham, a visitor of the celebration, said. “And this is talking about the whole entire collective. So in short, that’s what brought me out today.”
Governor Josh Shapiro made an appearance, saying, “It’s great to be with the Harrisburg community to both celebrate Juneteenth and to make sure that we are dedicating ourselves to the real meaning of Juneteenth, which is emancipation and freedom.”
