A former Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, has revealed the proposed unbundling of 115 Federal Unity Colleges across the country is to ensure a better performance in the schools.
The minister made this known at a event held recently in Oyo state.
The unity schools project started in the mid-1960s as an attempt to foster inter-regional education that de-emphasises tribal identity.
Currently, Nigeria has over a hundred unity schools, with the idea of using education as a tool for fostering unity through their location, an admission policy that reflects ethnic diversity, and curricula that prioritise inter-relationships.
Speaking during the 50th anniversary of the Federal Girls College in Oyo, the former minister of state for education revealed that the recent proposal to unbundle the 115 Federal Unity Colleges in the country into basic and secondary schools was to improve education performance.
