A particular focus of the month-long event series will be on acknowledging the historical significance of the local area.

BIG RAPIDS, Michigan — Ferris State University is set to host a diverse array of events throughout February to commemorate Black History Month.

The month-long celebration kicks off with a “Fireside Chat” featuring University President Bill Pink and Vice President for Diversity, Inclusion and Strategic Initiatives David Pilgrim on Feb. 4 at the David L. Eisler Center. 

The event, originally postponed from the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration due to extreme cold, will explore the university’s leadership history and future initiatives for social justice.

Highlights of the month’s events include:

  • Feb. 8: 30th Anniversary of the B.L.A.C.K. Image Awards at Williams Auditorium
  • Feb. 13: Opening reception for the “Insoluble Fibers” artist exhibit at the Fine Art Gallery
  • Feb. 18: Trivia night hosted by the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance
  • Feb. 20: Screening of “Hidden Figures of Oppression”
  • Feb. 25: “Old Settlers” presentation on African American residents …
