For this lecture of the fall 2022 semester for the History and Legacy of Black Entrepreneurship in the United States series, Allison Blakely spoke on “More Than Just a Notion: Audacious Ambitions vs Challenges Faced by 19th-Century African-American Entrepreneurs”

Drawn from his research on the first generation of African American U.S. consuls and diplomats, Allison Blakely’s presentation highlights three entrepreneurs from the 19th and early 20th century. Blakely offers their experiences as exemplary evidence that what is generally known about achievements in Black entrepreneurship in American history barely begins to capture the broad scope and boldness of aspirations and accomplishments in that sphere over the centuries.

By studying the history of Black entrepreneurship and innovation, we can gain an understanding of the creative strategies these entrepreneurs employed to succeed.
