CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Following the state’s decision to remove Advanced Placement African American Studies, the Charleston County School District may be offering the curriculum in another way.

The Charleston County School District’s Board of Trustees voted on Monday night to take a final vote of approval at its next meeting for the locally designed African American Studies Elective Course.

The proposed curriculum would be structured as an honors course and would count as one of students’ elective credits.

“I think it’s important for our students to be able to participate in courses so that they can learn about diversity in different cultures,” board member Darlene Dunmeyer-Roberson said. “I think it’s a travesty that we continue to offer AP European History, AP World History, APUSH, with no problems, but AP African American history was taken away from us.”
