The sheriff says a man shot and killed another man Monday morning at an Escambia County gas station during an argument about the victim’s wife.
Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons identified the man fatally shot at Circle K as 36-year-old Durrell Palmer.
Sheriff Simmons also announced Charles Moore, 35, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Sheriff Simmons says Palmer and Moore knew each other for about two years. He added the two recently had an argument about Palmer’s wife about two weeks ago. Sheriff Simmons says Moore then drove away, called ECSO dispatch and advised he was involved in the shooting. Moore said he would put his gun in the glovebox and pull over.
Deputies detained Moore at Palafox Street and 9 Mile Road a short time later.
According to Sheriff Simmons, both men arrived at the Circle K at the same time Monday morning. They began arguing again when Moore pulled out a handgun and shot Palmer 4-5 times. Sheriff Simmons says an investigation is still ongoing.
Moore is being held in Escambia County Jail without bond.
Palmer was a father, Pensacola community activist and local business owner.
Channel 3 talked to Palmer multiple times since 2020 about Black Lives Matter efforts in Pensacola.
Palmer told Channel 3 in June 2020 that he applied for a permit for the “Black Lives Matter” mural on A Street in Pensacola. He also recruited 16 local artists to each paint one letter.
Additionally, Channel 3 spoke to Palmer in December 2020 as his family provided 500 hams to Pensacola families in need just before Christmas.
