FTSE 100 starts lower; Diageo dismisses Guinness sale report, WH Smith to sell stores – Market Report [Video]

The FTSE 100 started the week on the back foot again after Friday saw the end of the run of new record highs.

London’s blue-chip index was down 34 at 8,468 in early trades with miners largely pulling the index down.

Guinness owner Diageo was another faller after it dismissed reports that it might sell the iconic black stout or its stake in sprits group Moet Hennessy.

“We note the recent media speculation around the Guinness brand and our stake in Moet Hennessy and we can confirm that we have no intention to sell either,” Diageo said in a statement.

Another iconic British brand, Dr Martens was also in the news after flagging “good progress” in its turnaround as revenue ticked up in its latest quarter.

Group revenue climbed by 3% to £267 million, aided by stronger American direct-to-consumer sales, the boot maker said.
