New watch tower in Black Hills wont just be used for fire lookout [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Imagine being a fire tower watch person, just coming from break, all of a sudden you spot a large smoke plume in the distance.

Tucked away in the Black Hills between Deadwood and Spearfish, the Tower of the Black Hills was created by entrepreneur Jeff Miller on the 168 acres of land he owns.

“It’s one of the world’s largest fire towers ever built,” Miller said. The tower stands 48 feet high and provides plenty of breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

Miller believes fire towers are starting to become irrelevant. “Fire towers are kind of the way out nowadays, but I wanted to bring it back in,” Miller said.

A lot of great ideas can start in one’s garage, basement or other unlikely places.

“Just dreamed it up on a napkin, about a year ago,” Miller explained.
