New ‘Mobility Mural’ blends art and advocacy [Video]

Just in time for July’s Disability Pride Month, which marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a sidewalk in South Burlington has been artistically transformed to send a serious message. “I want people to be thinking about other people,” said Shelby Glass of the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired.The offices of the nonprofit Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in South Burlington are home to a new “mobility mural.” The mural is painted on a walkway outside the VABVI building on Kimball Avenue, where it meets the public sidewalk on Kimball Avenue.Glass explained the mural represents ways people with disabilities stay active in the community. The paths were first created with chalk, by a wheelchair user, someone with a guide dog and two people who use white canes to help them navigate public spaces.
