Millions of mayflies swarm businesses on Lake Erie shoreline [Video]

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (WTVG/Gray News) – After a big swarm of mayflies descended on the town of Port Clinton, Ohio, business owners have gotten creative with how to get rid of them.

“We’ve lived here about two years, so this would probably be the worst year of the mayflies for us anyway,” said Blake Wellman, owner of Nutrition By The Lake.

He used a leaf blower to clear off piles of dead mayflies in front of his store.

Around the corner, Billy Rigoni, owner of Northern Exposure Candle Co., took it one step further. On Sunday, he rolled out his snowplow to scoop the dead mayflies off the sidewalk.

“This is the first time. They were a couple of inches thick. The blower wasn’t cutting it,” Rigoni said. “I think when you live here, you just get used to them.”
