Episode 3: Fighting For Change: Disability, Inclusion, and Mental Health [Video]

In Episode 3, I had the privilege of sitting down with Ben Andrews the Managing Director of Beyond Empower to discuss all things Disability, Inclusion and Mental Health.

In this episode, we explore the barriers disabled people face in staying active and the role of segregated provisions in shaping social relationships and support networks. Ben, shares his personal journey of being registered blind, navigating university, and discovering his passion for disability and inclusion, which led to founding his company, Beyond Empower. He reflects on the impact of losing both his parents and how his mother served as his early motivation for pursuing his career.

We discuss his success in publishing a children’s picture book, securing a book deal, and his efforts in submitting university research to the NHS, securing funding, and starting a pilot program to promote physical activity among disabled people. Ben also highlights his initiatives to make walking routes, parks, and green spaces more accessible, the economic impact of the spending power of disabled people and their families in the UK, and the educational workshops he conducts to help organizations make their provisions more accessible. Additionally, we address parental concerns and social barriers, including fears of bullying and negative experiences faced by disabled people in gyms.

Finally, Ben shares the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance and looking after his mental health while running a business.
