Custer celebrates its history with Gold Discovery Days | Lifestyle [Video]

CUSTER, S.D. – Saturday, July 20 was the second day of Custer’s Gold Discovery Days, an annual celebration of gold being discovered in the Black Hills.

Gold Discovery Days commemorates Lieutenant Colonel George Custer’s discovery of gold as he led the 7th Cavalry into the Black Hills in 1874. The discovery site would later become the town of Custer.

The main event in town is the parade — a way for local businesses, causes and sports teams to come out and show support for the community.

“Well as a business owner, it’s just awesome,” said Mary Lapee of Custer County Candy Company. “It brings in a lot of business. You know, get your name out there. It’s a community thing. It just brings people together.

“You get to meet old friends and classmates, so everybody just looks forward to it every year.”
