Agencies react to passing, signing of anti-DEI bill in Alabama [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed a new bill into law that prohibits public schools and universities from funding or maintaining diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

The NAACP has expressed their disappointment stating that this action is a setback for the state and is particularly disheartening given the work that so many have done to fight for equality during the civil rights movement. The organization vows to fight back against this decision.

The president of Alabama’s NAACP, Benard Simelton, has spoken with some universities who are seeking legal workarounds to keep their DEI programs on campus. He hopes that these efforts will be successful, as the new law will not only impact diversity among students, but also professors and other leaders who could feel the effects of these changes. Additionally, Simelton notes that this law will not only affect public colleges, but other state agencies as well.
