Iowa City School Board votes to close Hills Elementary at the end of the school year [Video]

HILLS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa City School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to close Hills Elementary School at the end of the school year.

District leaders proposed the idea at a meeting in February citing the state voucher program and stalling enrollment.

“The decision will impact the entire system,” said School Board President Ruthina Malone.

Hills Elementary has the lowest enrollment, 141, and costs the district the most money to operate. Dozens of parents spoke at the meeting explaining to the board that the school is a beacon in Hills. The small class sizes and diversity were the reason for attending the school.

“This is just a small town that gets overlooked,” said James DeWitt, a Hills Elementary School Parent.
